UGANDA PREPARES FOR MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Ahead of the forth coming world mountain running championships, team Uganda is set.
A team of 8 will this afternoon be flagged off officially by the State Sports Minister, Charles Bakkabulindi at the National Council of Sports (NCS).
The team, which has been undergoing intense training for the past 4 weeks in Bukwo is composed of 5 seniors – Daniel Rotich, Isaac Kiprop, Kibet Soyekwa, Nathan Ayeko, and James Kibet.
Three Juniors will take part in this championship where Phillip Kipyeko is the only registered male athlete with the duo; Stellah Chesang and Patricia Chekwemoi taking the women slots.
The World Mountain running championships will take place in Casette di Massa, located at the foot of the Apuan Alps in the Tuscany region of Italy on Sunday.
At this event in Italy, youth boys will run 4.7 kilometers with 280 meters of ascending, while youth girls will compete over a 3.87 kilometer course with 220 meters of ascending.
Uganda took the first four positions in last year’s event that took place in the Polish city of Krynica Zdroj, Malopolska.
Phillip Kiplimo won the Senior’s race in Krynica Zdroj, Malopolska, after posting 54: 22 minutes. Geofrey Kusuro (55:06), Nathan Ayeko (55:19) and Peter Kibet (55:27) followed to complete Uganda’s clean sweep.
Italy were runners up with their best athlete, Bernard Dematteis finishing 5th overall (55:44).
Italian lady, Alice Gaggi (42:47) won the seniors women with compatriot, Nakagenet Crippa winning the Juniors men after posting 38:58.
