Alonso dismisses Mercedes rumours, targets championship with Mclaren

Fernando Alonso has reaffirmed his committment to the McLaren-Honda project amid speculation linking him with a move to Mercedes.

The Spaniard is on a list of drivers under consideration to replace Nico Rosberg at Mercedes next season after the Germany announced his retirement from the sport.

This was stressed by Mercedes chief Toto Wolff saying Alonso couldn’t be overlooked as they search for a replacement driver to partner Lewis Hamilton in 2017.

But Alonso insists his future is with McLaren and during a speech at McLaren’s Technology Centre on Tuesday 12th,December 2016, he told staff his “only goal” is to be champion again with the British team.

“I believe in this project, I’m committed and I want to be World Champion with McLaren-Honda,” he said. “That’s my only goal.”

Various reports indicate Valtteri Bottas of Williams  is the leading candidate to replace Rosberg at Mercedes, closely followed by Pascal Wehrlein of  Manor Racing and Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso.
